What Barrel Nut Thread Pattern Does My AR-15 Upper Receiver Use?

Quick Answer

Standard AR-15 upper receivers use 1-3/16 x 16 TPI (threads per inch) barrel nut threads. This is a universal military specification thread pattern shared by virtually all AR-15 upper receivers, meaning any mil-spec barrel nut will fit any standard AR-15 upper. AR-10 and large-frame receivers use a different, larger thread pattern.

Why It Matters

The barrel nut is what secures the barrel to the upper receiver and also serves as the mounting point for most free-float handguards. Since almost all AR-15 uppers share the same thread pattern, you have wide compatibility across manufacturers for both barrel nuts and handguards. Understanding this means you can confidently mix and match components from different brands without worrying about thread incompatibility.

The Detail

The standard AR-15 barrel nut thread is 1-3/16 inches in diameter with 16 threads per inch (1-3/16 x 16 TPI). This specification has remained unchanged since the original AR-15 design.

Barrel nut types you will encounter:

Mil-spec barrel nut: The standard round nut with notches for a barrel nut wrench. Used with two-piece drop-in handguards (like standard M4 handguards). Must be timed so the gas tube channel aligns with the gas tube.

Proprietary barrel nuts: Many free-float handguard manufacturers use their own barrel nut designs that still thread onto the standard 1-3/16 x 16 receiver threads. Examples include:
- Aero Precision BAR barrel nut (for Atlas and Enhanced handguards)
- BCM KMR barrel nut
- Geissele barrel nut (for MK series rails)
- Midwest Industries barrel nut

These proprietary nuts all use the same receiver thread pattern but have different external shapes to interface with their specific handguard systems.

AR-10 / LR-308 receivers use a larger thread pattern and are NOT compatible with AR-15 barrel nuts. The two most common AR-10 thread patterns are DPMS (1-5/8 x 16 TPI) and Armalite (proprietary). DPMS and Armalite AR-10 parts are not interchangeable with each other.

Barrel nut torque: Mil-spec calls for 30 to 80 foot-pounds, tightened to the nearest gas tube alignment slot. Proprietary nuts follow manufacturer specifications.

Build Impact

When choosing a handguard, the barrel nut comes with it — you do not need to source them separately. Make sure you have the correct barrel nut wrench for your specific handguard system. When installing, use aeroshell grease (or anti-seize) on the receiver threads to prevent galling. Torque to manufacturer specification with a torque wrench. If using a mil-spec barrel nut, time it so the gas tube passes through cleanly.
